Tonsil stones :The tonsils are a gland-like structure. There are two tonsils in the body, which are on either side of the back of the throat. Tonsils prevent viruses and bacteria from entering the body through the mouth and throat and protect your body from diseases. The tonsils have holes and cracks like a sponge. In these cracks and holes, bacteria, pieces of food, dead skin cells and mucus accumulate to form a hard lump, which is called “tonsil stones” or “white granule in the tonsils”.

Some people do not feel that they have got this problem even after having tonsil stones. In some cases it can be quite difficult to see the tonsils; they can range in size from a rice grain to a grape. Sometimes, the size of the tonsil stones becomes very large, as a result of which there is a lot of swelling in the tonsils as well as the smell of them. Having tonsil stones causes symptoms like bad mouth, choking, difficulty swallowing and ear pain.

Sometimes tonsil stones do not need treatment. This is because white granule in the tonsils does not usually cause any harmful conditions. If a white grain has formed in your tonsils but you are not able to feel it or you have no problem with the symptoms caused by tonsil stones, then the doctors leave it without treatment. A tonsil stones usually does not cause any serious health problems, but in some cases it can cause quite a disturbing situation.

what is causes tonsil stones?

Why is a tonsil stones?

White grains in the tonsils consist of bacteria, pieces of food and other substances that accumulate inside the tonsils. Tonsils are a type of glands located in the back of the throat, which protects your body from infection. These glands have a few folds, called tonsillar crypts. Most tonsillars are small and have a size of about 1 to 2 mm, but in some cases they can grow up to 1 cm in size.

If the size of your tonsillar crypts increases, then minerals like calcium begin to accumulate in it and become hardened to form stones. The bacteria or fungi that cause tonsillitis, they also cause white rash to form in the tonsils. Over time, pieces of food and other substances get hardened and become tonsil stones. In some people’s tonsils, only one tonsil stones are formed, while in the tonsils of others, many small white grains may form.

Tonsil stones can occur due to the following reasons:

  • Failure to clean teeth properly
  • Increased tonsil size
  • Any chronic sinus disease
  • Chronic tonsillitis (swelling of tonsils)

When does the risk of tonsil stones increase?

Some of the following conditions increase the risk of having tonsil stones:

If there is repeated swelling or irritation in your tonsils or any other problem related to the tonsils, then the chances of getting tonsil stones increases significantly.

The formation of tonsil stones is a more common problem in adults than in children. The tonsil stones are usually of small size, but in some rare cases it can be large.

The likelihood of a person having tonsil stones increases with their age. Men are more likely to have tonsil stones than women and the size of tonsil stones is also larger than women.

How to protect against tonsil stones?

Removing the tonsils is the only way to prevent tonsil stones from developing. But by taking special care of daily mouth cleaning, the chances of getting tonsil stones can be reduced.

If you have tonsil stones or this problem keeps happening again and again, then with the help of the following steps you can prevent them:

Brush your teeth at least twice a day, gargle with an antiseptic or with salt water and drink some water after eating food so that the remaining food goes inside the throat.

Take special care of mouth hygiene, such as cleaning the tongue lightly with a brush while brushing teeth. This is done so that bacteria that accumulate on the tongue are removed.

  • Gargle with salt in warm or lukewarm water
  • Do not let the body lack water and drink enough water
  • Quit smoking or smoking cigarettes, as it is also harmful.
  • Test

How is a tonsil stones tested?

If you feel that you have a tonsil stones, have a doctor check your throat and mouth. The tonsil stones is usually tested by a doctor or dentist, during which the patient’s mouth and back of the throat are inspected.

Tonsil stones may or may not be visible. If tonsil stones are not visible, the doctor may scan them to detect them. If the tonsil stones is shaken during the examination, then unpleasant smell comes from the mouth. If the tonsil stones is not visible, then it can be quite difficult to test it.

Some radiographic imaging tests can be done to test the tonsil stones, such as :-

X-ray:

The tonsil stones can be detected during this test. But many times an x-ray machine can scan teeth or hardened blood vessels, as if an outside object has penetrated into the body.

Computer Tomography:

This is called CT scan, tonsil stones can also be detected with the help of this test.

Tonsil stones treatment

Most types of tonsil stones are not harmful, but due to them, they start to stench or cause other problems, due to which people get them removed. There are many methods available to treat tonsil stones, ranging from home remedies to medical procedures. The tonsil stones are scraped out with a toothbrush, which is the simplest procedure for its treatment.

In most cases tonsil stones removal process is usually done at home. During this, a piece of cotton is taken and the tonsils are pressed with it. By pressing the tonsils, the stones come out, which is held with cotton and taken out.

Rapid cough or gurgling also causes the tonsil stones that has accumulated together to move out. After the white grains of the tonsils come out, add salt in lukewarm water and gargle, in this way, the remaining bacteria are removed. Some people get tonsil stones after a short time while others have this problem for a long time. However, there is no traditional treatment that can be selected.

Some doctors use the help of a special type of procedure called coblation tonsil cryptolysis to treat tonsil stones. In this process, with the help of a laser machine, the tonsils are resized and the hole in the tonsils is closed where the tonsil stones are formed. To perform this procedure, the affected part is numb. However, solid tonsil cryolysis is also not a permanent cure for this problem, as tonsil stones are likely to recur.

In some severe cases, the doctor may have to perform an operation to remove the tonsil stones. To perform this surgical procedure, the doctors numb the tonsils and the area around them. If you have been having tonsil stones for a long time and are having tonsillitis again and again, you can suggest removal of tonsils. The procedure in which the tonsils are completely removed is called a Tosillectomy. However, in very rare cases, the doctor recommends tosillectomy, as they are aware that the risks may be greater than the benefits of this surgery procedure.

Home remedies for

Tonsil stones can also be treated with the help of some home remedies, such as:

Garlic:

It has antimicrobial (antimicrobial) properties, which help in removing bacteria from tonsil stones. Chew a lump of garlic in the mouth and repeat this process several times a day. Not only this, including garlic in your diet can also benefit from it. (And read – benefits of eating garlic on an empty stomach)

curd:

Many types of good bacteria are found in it, which fight many other types of microbes including bacteria found in tonsils. The good bacteria found in yogurt is also very beneficial for your digestive system, as it balances the number of bacteria found in the intestines. Homemade yogurt made from milk obtained from grass-fed cows should be eaten, as it is a good quality yogurt.

Vinegar:

Vinegar has acidic (acidic) properties, with the help of which tonsils help to break down the calcium in the stones. Mix one spoon vinegar in one cup of lukewarm water, use Apple cider vinegar for better results. Gargle once daily with this mixture. Until your tonsil stones are fixed, you can gargle with it.

Water:

To remove tonsil stones and to protect it, drinking sufficient amount of water is very important. Make sure that you are drinking enough water regularly. If there is very little saliva in your mouth and your mouth remains dry, then bacteria easily grow in the mouth. These bacteria help in making tonsil stones and increase its size.
